Description
A square format, saturated with electric blue and fluorescent pink: the work reconstructs a stretch of urban wall where posters have piled up, torn away, been pasted over, until they become a material in their own right. Traces of an Oasis concert poster are still discernible — — its monumental letters surfacing in fragments, alongside shreds of announcements from which only syllables survive ("KEY", "SON", "AND SHOW"). The wall speaks in snatches, like a memory full of holes.
At the centre, a rat rendered in black stencil rears up on its hind legs, brandishing a squeegee on a long handle. The silhouette is instantly recognisable: this is Banksy's emblematic rodent, figure of the outsider, the city survivor, the creature that thrives where it isn't wanted. Here it isn't tagging — it's erasing. Or cleaning. The ambiguity of the gesture is what gives the image its bite: is the rat the vandal or the maintenance worker, the one covering over or the one revealing?
Lasveguix works this tension between in the manner of the affichistes and contemporary stencilling. The photographed wall, the stripped-back layers, the runs of pink and violet compose an almost abstract ground against which the black figure stands out with the crispness of a cut-out silhouette. The result is at once documentary — a wall, a moment, a city — and a fully controlled composition.
What plays out beneath the surface is the question of the urban palimpsest. Advertising, music, graffiti, institutional erasure — everything overlays itself on the same surface, and no one gets the last word. The rat, for its part, remains.
Presentation
Guillaume Picart, known as Lasveguix, is a French artist from Seine-Saint-Denis, who began his artistic career as a graffiti artist under the pseudonym of Guix along the Canal de l'Ourcq, when he was teenager. After a break in artistic creation, he returned to his passion in 2022 and is currently working on the production of numerous works in various media, mainly inspired by the influence of pop art.
Lasveguix is directly inspired by Jacques Villeglé and Raymond Hains, and uses photographs of famous faces as well as torn posters to create his paintings. He then covers these supports with graffiti and splashes of paint, which gives life to colorful and powerful works, reminiscent of sections of urban walls torn from the street.
His artistic signature is based on his ability to give relief and volume to his paintings. He cultivates a real taste for the texture and material of torn paper, thus creating an impression of movement, by superimposing successive layers of paper.
