Description
This oil on canvas, dated to the 1930s–1940s, depicts a still life composed of a vase with poppies and wildflowers, accompanied by books, a frame, and a paintbrush. The composition, both intimate and scholarly, testifies to Darel's taste for everyday objects elevated to the rank of visual poetry. The work is presented in an antique gilded frame. This work was exhibited at the Salon des peintres français de New-York.
Georges Darel (1892–1943) is a Swiss painter of the interwar period, recognized for his elegant still lifes and interior compositions of great chromatic sensitivity. His work, marked by the influence of post-impressionism, is distinguished by a free touch and a rich and contrasted palette.
