Description
Pink and crimson tones dominate the scene, and birds with iridescent plumage swirl in a rhythmic dance. Their forms merge with lush, blooming flora. The composition evokes the opulence of the Rococo era. A string of white pearls weaves through the movement. This delicate line creates a stark contrast against the saturated background. The animals act as symbolic guides within a dreamlike garden. This painting, “Rosa", blends Eastern vibrancy with Western classical influences. It explores themes of beauty and bewilderment through a fantastic lens. The circular format enhances the sense of a self-contained universe. Every brushstroke contributes to a feeling of abundance. Precision meets imagination in the rendering of the feathers. The gaze of the birds adds a layer of quiet contemplation to the chaotic splendor. The pearl necklace serves as a focal point of elegance. It anchors the swirling energy of the natural world. The piece culminates in a rich tapestry of floral and avian forms.
Presentation
The American artist Augustina Droze (b. 1981) employs animals as symbolic narrators of her personal experience. Her work reflects life as a foreigner and mother, framing the world as at once exotic, beautiful, and bewildering. Based in Beijing for the past decade, she fuses Eastern and Western elements into vibrant paintings and installations marked by Rococo-inspired abundance. These immersive works form a modern mythology—dreamlike landscapes alive with symbolism and contradiction.
Droze's art has been exhibited widely, including the Castellani Art Museum (2014), Banaras Hindu University as a Fulbright Senior Scholar (2017), the U.S. Embassy Beijing American Center as a Distinguished Artist Envoy (2022), the London Biennale (2023), the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (2024), and the Carrousel du Louvre (2025). In addition to her studio practice, she has completed major public art projects worldwide, with commissions from Forbes Company, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Tucson Pima Arts Council, and Nagpur International Airport, among others.
