Description

Ru Xiao Fan was born in Nanjing in 1954. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Normal University in 1982 and moved to France in 1983. In 1986, he graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied in the studios of Olivier Debré and Pierre Alechinsky. He has since lived and worked in Paris. As one of the early Chinese artists to study in France following China's Reform and Opening-Up, Ru has developed a practice shaped by both Chinese and European cultural experiences. His early works reflected elements of Daoist and Zen thought, while his later practice turned towards everyday life and consumer society. In more recent works, he has used surreal imagery to address questions of identity, religion, and the human condition.

This series of small-scale works on paper centres on recurring images of butterflies and moths. They sometimes occupy the composition like natural specimens; elsewhere, they appear among leaves, water, or spider webs. In other works, the insects cover a figure's face or occupy the centre of the body, interacting with circular halos, expressive gestures, and compositions that evoke devotional imagery. Rather than depicting insects through scientific observation, the artist uses simplified lines, subdued colours, and storybook-like forms to transform them into figures suspended between natural life and cultural symbolism.

The associations of transformation, fragility, and transience carried by the butterfly enter into a subtle dialogue with the human body and with symbols of identity and belief. Some works possess a playful lightness, while others become unfamiliar or faintly unsettling as insects replace, conceal, or merge with human faces. The boundary between human and natural forms consequently becomes unstable. Moving between humour, poetry, and surrealism, the series invites reflection on changes in life, the fluidity of identity, and the shifting relationship between the individual and the surrounding world.

Ru Xiao Fan has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including Suzhou Museum, the Musée national des arts asiatiques–Guimet, and the Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration in Paris. His works are held in collections including the Musée Guimet, Musée Cernuschi, Suzhou Museum, Today Art Museum in Beijing, He Xiangning Art Museum, White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, the French National Contemporary Art Fund, FRAC Île-de-France, and the Seoul Museum of Contemporary Art.
