Description

The Shape of Missing (2026) explores absence not as emptiness, but as something capable of acquiring a presence of its own.

The painting has a deeply personal starting point: the loss of Oxana Morasch's mother and the way this absence changed after the artist became a mother herself. Through her son, Morasch began to experience the relationship between generations differently. What was no longer physically present took on another form through memory, love and motherhood.

Layered fields of muted blue, mineral grey, earth and warm ochre are crossed by fragmented marks and partially concealed forms. Traces appear, disappear and return beneath the surface, evoking memories that remain present while being continually reshaped by time and lived experience.

The work is not only concerned with the fragmentation of memory. It considers how absence itself can change as our lives change, and how relationships may continue across generations in forms that are no longer physical but remain emotionally present.

Morasch's background in audiovisual media, photography and visual storytelling also informs her sensitivity to movement, layering and visual rhythm.

Rather than defining this experience for the viewer, Morasch preserves an open space within the painting. The personal origin of the work becomes a point of connection through which viewers may encounter their own memories, relationships and experiences of absence.

The Shape of Missing belongs to What Lives Within Us, All at Once, an ongoing series examining memory, identity, motherhood and the emotional transformations that accompany change.

Created entirely by hand in the artist's Berlin studio, this unique original painting combines acrylic and texture paste on canvas. It is mounted on a certified pinewood stretcher, hand-signed by Oxana Morasch and accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity issued by the artist.

Presentation

Oxana Morasch is a Berlin-based contemporary artist whose practice explores identity, memory, emotional transformation, and the transitional states that reshape our understanding of ourselves and others. With an academic background in Audiovisual Media and professional experience spanning photography, moving image, production, and visual storytelling, Morasch brings a distinctly cinematic sensitivity to painting. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, she develops her surfaces through successive processes of layering, concealment, disruption, and revelation. Lines change direction, forms emerge and disappear, while traces of earlier interventions remain visible beneath later layers, reflecting the way memory and identity continuously evolve. Her ongoing series, What Lives Within Us, All at Once, examines states of becoming—the uncertain territory between who we have been and who we are becoming. Motherhood and changing intergenerational relationships provide an intimate point of departure, opening onto broader questions of love, freedom, connection, childhood, loss, and transformation. Earth tones and ochres evoke origin and accumulated memory; blue introduces movement and transformation; recurring red traces suggest love and the persistence of emotional connection. Morasch deliberately avoids imposing a single interpretation, allowing personal experience to provide the emotional foundation while abstraction creates space for the viewer's own memories and associations. Her 2026 work Emerging, selected by the artist as particularly representative of her current direction, brings together these concerns through acrylic, texture paste, sand, and crackle techniques. Oxana Morasch lives and works in Berlin, Germany, and is represented internationally by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga.
