Description
Mare Nostrum 1, an etching with aquatint and hand colouring of 1985 by Josep Guinovart (Barcelona, 1927-2007), on a horizontal sheet of 36 by 54 cm, in an edition of fifty. It is the first of three sheets of the same year, technique, dimensions and edition size held here, forming a Mediterranean triptych in all but name. The addition of colour by hand after printing means that no two impressions within the edition are identical, and it aligns the sheets with Guinovart's painting practice, in which the surface is worked physically rather than composed at a distance. Guinovart's art is rooted in the Catalan agricultural landscape and in the material substance of earth, straw and burnt wood, and the Mediterranean is for him a specific place rather than a classical idea.
Presentation
Josep Guinovart i Bertran (Barcelona 1927-2007) was a Catalan painter, designer and engraver.
After studying at the school of Decorative Arts of Barcelona and his first exhibition in 1948, he won a scholarship in 1953 from the French Institute to study in Paris for five months. On his return to Barcelona, he began creating some abstract artwork resembling a collage. In the 60s, his work took a political perspective. The artist was actively involved in the anti-Franco movement and made many propaganda posters for this cause.
In the 70s, he started creating some unconventional pieces with the constant use of three-dimensional elements, mostly on large scale. He shows through his work that the categories "realism" and "asbtract" are outdated today.
In 1994, a museum dedicated to his work was inaugurated in Agramunt, the town where his mother was born and to which he has always been specially attached.
He died December 2007 at age 80 after a stroke.
