With its smooth curves and velvety texture, clay sculpture has the advantage of being both soft to the touch and easy on the eye! Clay is a mixture of earth and water, which is easier and better for modelling. This raw material is often favored by sculptors particularly inspired by nature and life because, as organic matter, it reveals their ephemeral beauty. Indeed, a crumbly and hydrophobic material, clay has a fragile beauty which reinforces its purity and rarity. White, grey, red, terracotta or ash clay: it's used today by many artists such as Reno, Kazuhiko Tanaka, Cecilio Sanchez Fierro, Madga Von Hanau and Maxime Piccoli.
What are the 4 types of clay?
The four types of clay are earthenware, stoneware, porcelain and ball clay.
Why is clay so special?
The main special quality of clay is its plasticity when wet and its ability to harden when dried or fired. This means it is both easy to work with, and can produce long-lasting results.
What is the difference between pottery and sculpture?
In visual art, pottery and sculpture are often the same or similar, because they both refer to art objects made by the same process. However, generally pottery is more functional in comparison to sculpture, which is more decorative.
