Biography

Walter Schnackenberg (1880–1961) was a German painter, illustrator, and poster designer, renowned for his contributions to Art Nouveau and Expressionism. Born in Lauterberg, Germany, he studied under Heinrich Knirr and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Franz von Stuck. His early works were published in the magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus.

Schnackenberg's frequent travels to Paris exposed him to the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso, influencing his style. He became known for his theatrical posters, notably for the Deutsches Theater in Munich, and for designing stage sets and costumes.

In the 1920s, he illustrated the book Ballet und Pantomime, featuring 22 color lithographs. His later works took on a surreal and darker tone, reflecting the changing times in Germany.

Schnackenberg was married to the daughter of Carl von Thieme, co-founder of Munich Re and Allianz Insurance. He spent his final years in Rosenheim, passing away in 1961.
