L'opera Blue Dancers (1899) di Edgar Degas è sicuramente uno dei più grandi disegni del pastello mai realizzato. Sulla carta le piccole ballerine sembrano vive, sembra quasi di sentirle respirare... Disegnare dal vero, o rappresentare personaggi, viene generalmente insegnato in molte scuole e accademie di belle arti. Ecco perché il pastello, il carboncino o anche una semplice matita spesso lanciano la carriera di un artista. Il disegno è spesso considerato il modo più ideale per gli artisti di rendere il corpo umano. Permette all'artista di padroneggiare la linea, la profondità e la forma, un'abilità necessaria per avere successo nell'arte del ritratto. Ma il ritratto vivente ha spesso come modello un corpo in movimento, che costringe l'artista a rappresentare l'azione muscolare, la direzione e la prospettiva. E questo è tanto più vero per rappresentare l'energia dei ballerini. Se il XIX secolo fu segnato dal talento di Degas, vide anche la nascita della macchina fotografica e la necessità per gli artisti di rappresentare il movimento - di fotografare la vita. Nella selezione Artsper, le opere dell'artista figurativo Marc Desgrandchamps si ispirano a la scomposizione del movimento e gli esperimenti cronofotografici di Eadweard Muybridge. Nel frattempo, il lavoro di Alejandra Caballero è molto più introspettivo. Dimostra il fatto stesso che le azioni più calme e sottili contengono una bellezza che gli artisti possono sublimare nella loro ritratti di vita quotidiana.
