En óptica, es la suma de todos los colores. En nuestra mente, él es la ausencia absoluta de color. Entre los artistas, la condición de blanco ha evolucionado y se ha reinventado constantemente. ¿Revelador de color o sin color? ¿Blanco inmaterial o blanco material? ¿Ausencia o mancha? En la antigüedad, el blanco se utilizaba por su valor simbólico. Para los griegos, cuyas estatuas se pintaban sistemáticamente, es sinónimo de incompleto, mientras que para los romanos simboliza la pompa y la virtud imperial. En el cristianismo, el blanco se utiliza en oposición al negro, el bien divino y sagrado frente a la oscuridad. Por otro lado, también puede simbolizar la muerte y la enfermedad, como muestran las representaciones del Cristo famélico. En el Renacimiento, el blanco se utilizaba para sublimar los rostros y las galas. Da Vinci incluso desarrolló su concepto de sfumato, una penetración de la luz en la oscuridad. A lo largo de la tradición pictórica, el blanco era precioso por su capacidad de reflejar la luz. Atrae la mirada, e incluso en cantidades mínimas, ilumina el sujeto. Este efecto de realce del contraste puede verse en Rembrandt o Vermeer y su Jeune Fille à la perle. En los impresionistas, el blanco se utilizaba como el tono más brillante del gris. Mientras que Manet produce lienzos precursores del monocromo como La Lecture, donde casi todo es blanco, Monet ofrece una gradación de blancos con su l'Effet de neige à Giverny. Pero el primer blanco monocromo verdadero aparecerá con Carré blanc sur fond blanc, de Malevitch, que declarará: "Atravesé la pantalla azul de las limitaciones de color, salí en el blanco". Los modernos se apasionarán por el blanco, poniéndose de acuerdo sobre su pleno valor. Miro se cuestionará notablemente el estatus del blanco en el lienzo. En su cuadro Mujer, Pájaro, Estrella, el blanco está pintado en positivo y brilla por su ausencia inmaterial alrededor de la estrella. Picasso, por su parte, explorará el valor del blanco en paralelo a sus famosos periodos de color, como se puede ver con su Mujer extendida con su mano gigantesca. Piero Manzoni, por último, se hizo famoso gracias a sus "Achromes", una serie de lienzos compuestos exclusivamente por tonos de blanco. El blanco, en el siglo XX, se convirtió así en la culminación de la abstracción minimal. Para algunos, como Kandinsky, este color cósmico se asocia a una búsqueda espiritual de lo absoluto, que guía al artista en la expresión de sus emociones. El blanco es hoy un tema de investigación artística tan popular como siempre. Roman Opalka se ha hecho famoso por sus suites de números en blanco sobre blanco, mientras que Daniel Arsham reinvierte las paredes blancas de las galerías goteando sus obras sobre ellas. El blanco es, por tanto, un color completo con múltiples simbolismos. Color divino de la humildad, color de la pureza e inmaculado, color del vacío y de la ausencia, pero siempre color.
