Explosiones de color
Los artistas inventaron los primeros pigmentos hace más de 40.000 años, utilizando materiales naturales como la tierra, la tiza y la grasa animal. Por aquel entonces, la paleta de colores de la que disponían los artistas era limitada: los únicos colores que podían producir eran el rojo, el negro, el blanco, el marrón y el amarillo. Desde entonces, los descubrimientos de los artistas y los avances científicos han dado lugar a una gama mucho más amplia de pigmentos de color. Ahora los artistas pueden elegir casi todos los colores imaginables o visibles para el ojo humano, desde los tonos del negro hasta los más vivos.
En el arte moderno y contemporáneo, los artistas han aprovechado la gama de colores de que disponen en la era moderna. Muchos artistas abstractos han utilizado el color como eje principal de su obra; un ejemplo es el movimiento artístico Orfismo de Sonia y Robert Delaunay. Estas obras rechazan cualquier noción de naturalismo y perspectiva, favoreciendo los planos planos abstractos de colores brillantes.
Hoy en día, muchos artistas continúan el legado de los artistas modernistas que situaban los colores vivos y brillantes en el centro de su obra.
