Noémie Meijer is a French interior designer and architect. In 2016, she turned her passion for decoration, art and design into her full-time job with the creation of Pierre Papier Ciseaux, her interior design firm. From her studio in Brussels, Noémie offers advice and direction to an international clientele, helping them enhance their homes and commercial spaces with beautiful, personalized decor. Discover more about Noémie in our interview where we explore her house and ask her about her artistic inspirations.

1. Hello Noémie! How would you describe your interior design style? And where do you draw your inspiration from at the start of a design project?

I have a rather eclectic design style, since I can be attracted to something really minimalist and black & white, as much as to something really vintage and colorful. But overall, I tend to a soft, warm, minimalist style, with a hint of Californian vibes. I am also very much inspired by Scandinavian design, Japandi style and Wabi-sabi materials. Styles that I would spice up with a colorful artwork or piece of furniture, or a beautiful design piece. I have a tendency to keep things simple, so they can grow around the life of the inhabitants of the space I design, and follow them through time.

At the start of a project, I get inspired by all the info I can get from my clients: what they want, what they look for in their home, how they live in their space. That's really the start of all projects for me. I will then let the inspiration grow from a single color, a piece of furniture, a rug, and follow it through the whole design process. I am inspired by designs from all over the world, artworks I see in exhibitions, restaurants and hotels I visit... It can be the mix of two materials, an association of colors, a light movement.

2. What has been your favorite design commission, or the project you're most proud of, to date and why?

It's impossible for me to choose because all projects are different, and they all mean something special to me. I loved working on this small, beautiful and cozy apartment in Paris, as much as I enjoyed letting my creativity go wild on this Belgian cupcake cafe, or on this four-story house in Brussels.

What impacts me in a project is the connection I make with my clients, and the challenges they offer me. I remember this huge piano that we had to make room for in a tiny studio, but it tied the whole room together, so I developed the project around it. Or this tight-budget project on which I had to be even more creative to come up with solutions that my clients could afford. Every design project has its story!

3. How do you incorporate artworks into your design work? What links can be established between art and design?

It sometimes is a piece that my clients are desperate to find a place for, so we can create the room around it, giving it the space to express itself. Or, I can suggest an artwork that will add the perfect final touch to a room design: it can either be complimentary, in the same colors, or on the opposite add some spice to the room with a vibrant color, or a very large format. I also love creating gallery walls with all sorts of artworks (but they have a link with each other, that or it's the frames that tie them all together), and it's an easy way to incorporate personal items or pictures for my clients.

4. If you had to pick 3 artists or art movements as sources of inspiration, who or what would you pick and why?

I am very much attracted to minimalist art such as the current tendency of one line drawings. I think they can be very powerful and yet they stay very discreet in an interior, and are easy to work with. I also, in general, love black and white or neutral tones drawings, especially everything that is architectural. I am also inspired by the color combinations of Gustav Klimt, I think it is very smooth and warm, with just the right amount of gold.

5. Are you an art collector yourself? If so, which works of art can be found in your home? Which works of art do you dream to own?

I have a lot of art pieces in my home, but it's very eclectic as it can be a designer chair (I highly consider them as art pieces!), a drawing that I bought from a street artist in Porto, or old maps that I had framed. I also started a collection of architectural sketches from various unknown artists.

6. Which artistic venue or cultural center anywhere in the world do you find the most inspiring?

My favorite place would be the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where I am inspired by the architecture itself, as well as all the creative energy it reflects from the city.

7. And finally, what advice would you give to someone who wants to update their home, but who is short on time?

Make the most of statement pieces! A beautiful rug, a colorful print, a complex wallpaper, a designer lamp or a stand-out chair will take all the attention in a room if styled accordingly. As for the rest: less is more!
