In the world of Nikolaus von Wolff's "Readers" series, one is transported into a chiaroscuro of black-and-white nostalgia, a visual ode to the early 1980s. Through the lens of authenticity, these "photographs" reveal a captivating tableau of people engrossed in the written word in the confines of crowded trains. Von Wolff, a visual alchemist, conjures a sense of temporal displacement by simulating the raw aesthetic of classic documentary photography. Yet as the attentive eye engages with the scenes, the interplay of perfect lighting and legible book titles invites a thoughtful pause, challenging the essence of authenticity these images seemingly exude.

A testament to Nikolaus von Wolff's artistry, the series evokes a dual sense of familiarity and disquiet. The scenes of commuters engrossed in thick volumes of literature recall a time when the tangible weight of a book and the rustle of pages were part of the reading experience. However, the eerie clarity and careful composition betray a subtle artificiality that leads the viewer to question the origins of these seemingly pristine moments frozen in time.

Amidst this visual dance between reality and artificiality, the suspicion that artificial intelligence (AI) is involved emerges as a thematic undercurrent. This suspicion is rooted not only in the immaculate quality of the images, but also in the subtle hints of anachronism. A temporal dissonance that defies the conventional photographic norms of the non-digital 1980s invites the viewer to create a cognitive bridge spanning five decades. The dichotomy between the analog past and the digital present becomes a playground for the mind, a space where past and present intertwine in a dance of playful confusion and powerful reflection.

In the enigmatic images of "Readers," Nikolaus von Wolff's gaze captures more than just the surface of a bygone era. The "photographs" become windows into the intricate web of human consciousness and technological development. As we navigate the crowded trains of yesteryear, the characters, engrossed in their literary worlds, serve as vessels for self-reflection, asking us to reflect not only on the act of reading, but also on the evolving relationship between humanity and the tools it produces.

To understand the genesis of Nikolaus von Wolff's artistic vision, one must delve into the fascinating biography of the man behind the lens. Born into a family with a rich artistic heritage, Nikolaus von Wolff inherited a passion for visual storytelling. His early years were marked by an insatiable curiosity that led him to explore various areas of artistic expression, from traditional painting, documentary filmmaking to experimental multimedia installations.

Von Wolff's journey as a visual artist took a transformative turn when he encountered the burgeoning world of digital art and artificial intelligence. Drawn to the intersection of technology and creativity, he became a pioneer in the use of AI as a tool for artistic expression.

Presentation

Nikolaus von Wolff synthesises naturalistic landscape impressions and natural forms through the arrangement of artificial patterns. In doing so, the viewer inevitably consciously passes through the transition between an assumed pictorial identity and the grasping of the synthetic pictorial quality as his own generative process of perception. He takes travel photographs as a source for appropriative visual compositions. Adopting the artistic technique of the 'ecrire automatique' he decodes the simple photographs to re-reflect the significance of the explored environment in generative landscapes.

Nikolaus von Wolff (*1966) studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and worked for many years with the media of video and photography internationally at interfaces of intercultural communication.
