Description
Veniamin Pavlovich Belkin (Russian, 1884-1951): The Sower, 1920 Plate by Petrograd State Porcelain Factory, formerly Russian Imperial Porcelain Factory.
Plate, hard-paste porcelain, handpainted overglaze in bright colors with a farmer sowing seed. Round the rim, the motto in Russian 'Blessed is free labor', punctuated by a red star and tools of industry and agriculture: sickle, hammer, axe, cogwheel, etc.
Factory mark and date on reverse.
Polychrome painting, porcelain plate, diameter 9 3/8 x 1 1/8 inches.
Made at the State Porcelain Factory in 1920, and decorated by the factory painters after a design by V. P. Belkin. This design was one of the most popular of the early revolutionary period and was frequently illustrated in contemporary literature.A farmer sows the seeds of a new life in a new world, with an auspicious rainbow in the background. The slogan 'Blessed is free labour', meaning free from capitalist landowners, echoes a biblical exhortation. The figure is taken from Russian Lubok prints, but the sweeping brushstrokes create a dynamism associated with the Futurist style.
