Description
"Quiet Interior", 70 x 100 cm (27.6 x 39.4 inches), is a large-scale acrylic painting on heavyweight Fabriano paper by French contemporary artist Natalya Mougenot—influenced by Henri Matisse—depicting a vibrant still life with red tulips, blue vases, yellow lemons, and framed female portraits against a luminous green background.
Blending Fauvism and Expressionism in a metamodern style, it uses wild, non-naturalistic colors and bold contours to evoke emotion over realism, much like Matisse's Fauvist liberation of form where everyday objects pulse with inner vitality.
As Natalya says, “Art is what you feel inside," and this work reflects that belief through a domestic space that feels less like a setting and more like an emotional portrait of the self.
Matisse's influence shines in the bold colors, expressive outlines, and joyful domestic harmony, which Natalya adapts to her emotional language, turning a simple interior into a celebration of presence. The thick, energetic outlines and flattened forms echo Matisse's decorative boldness, while the stylized portraits in blue frames feel alive, almost watchful, adding Expressionist intensity that distorts forms to convey inner life.
The painting presents the home as a place of force, refuge, and identity—a space that reveals who we are, what we love, and how we live. In Natalya's words, “I trust intuition. What comes on the canvas is what lives inside me at that moment," and this intuitive energy is visible in the lively composition, where flowers, vessels, and framed figures become carriers of memory and presence rather than simple objects.

Made with acrylic paints on heavyweight professional acid-free Italian Fabriano paper, the painting is finished with a protective gloss varnish. Natalya explains that she works on paper because it perfectly suits her technique: she builds the first layer with acrylic paint, then adds acrylic pens in a second layer to bring more energy, movement, and vitality to the surface.
She also chooses paper because its standard formats are easy to frame, whether with a ready-made frame or a custom atelier frame, depending on the collector's taste and budget. In this way, the buyer becomes part of the process, because the frame helps complete the artwork's final presence in the home.
Her philosophy is grounded in authenticity, honesty, and metamodernism—the metamodern touch infusing sincerity and irony, where objects are both playful and profoundly personal. Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
