Description
The Pack is one of Zakhar Shevchuk's most ambitious explorations of perception and visual memory. Spread across a monumental canvas, numerous canine forms emerge from a network of painterly gestures and structured compartments. At first glance, the viewer encounters a collection of dogs. With time, however, the work reveals itself as something more complex: a constantly shifting field of images that appear, disappear and transform before the eye.
The composition is built around a series of rectangular sections that function almost like fragments of recollection. Each compartment contains partial figures, faces or gestural traces that suggest individual moments while remaining connected to the larger whole. Rather than presenting a single scene, the painting unfolds as a collection of visual impressions assembled into a dynamic network of relationships.
A larger central figure provides temporary stability, yet even this image remains fluid and open-ended. The viewer's attention continually migrates across the surface, discovering new details, connections and associations. This active process of looking becomes one of the work's central themes.
The restrained palette of black, white, grey and muted pink contributes to the painting's coherence while allowing the expressive brushwork to take centre stage. Visible drips, layered paint and energetic marks preserve the immediacy of the artist's gesture. Through its combination of abstraction, figuration and structural complexity, The Pack becomes a meditation on memory, instinct and the ways images persist within the mind long after direct experience has passed.
This artwork has been sold to a private collection. Zakhar Shevchuk occasionally accepts commissions inspired by themes and visual approaches explored in this work. Please contact the gallery for information regarding commissioned paintings and currently available works.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
