Description
A striking architectural composition. The gaze is guided towards the central opening of a monumental door. The stone walls, in ochre and sand tones, structure the space.
The light plays with the volumes. It creates sharp contrasts between the areas of shadow and the illuminated surfaces. Human silhouettes animate the passage. They bring a social and lively dimension to this urban scene.
The pictorial treatment is distinguished by a vertical division. Fine lines segment the canvas, perhaps evoking panels or a fragmented memory. The acrylic technique allows for precise flat areas and subtle transitions.
The whole exudes a contemplative serenity. The place becomes a meeting point between history and everyday life. This painting from 2023 captures the essence of a historical passage. The pale sky emphasizes the verticality of the fortifications.
Presentation
Khaled Hourani is one of the most influential Palestinian multidisciplinary conceptual artists. He is also a curator, writer, and cultural organiser whose practice explores everyday life, movement, borders, and the relationship between art and society. Working across painting, photography, installation, sculpture, and conceptual projects, Hourani often uses familiar objects, situations, and cultural references to consider how political conditions influence everyday experience. His work combines humour, imagination, and critical reflection to question ideas of access, mobility, and cultural exchange.
Born in Hebron in 1965, Hourani studied History at Hebron University in 1987. Alongside his artistic practice, he has held important positions within Palestinian cultural institutions, including the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and the International Academy of Art Palestine. His project Picasso in Palestine, which brought a work by Pablo Picasso to Ramallah in 2011, became an important example of his interest in borders, movement, and access to art. Hourani continues to work as an artist, curator, and cultural organiser across Palestine.
