Description
A queue stretches along a massive wall. Bodies pile up. Silhouettes blend into a compact and anonymous mass.
The painter uses acrylic to translate this tension. Gray and ocher tones dominate the composition. The contrast between the rigid verticality of the concrete and human fragility marks the space.
The perspective accentuates the effect of oppression. The eye follows the alignment of the figures towards a blocked horizon. Each character seems frozen in an endless wait.
The approach is sober. It favors the precision of the gesture and the force of the social subject. The white void in the foreground isolates the scene and reinforces the feeling of isolation.
This painting created in 202 explores patience and constraint. It transforms an everyday fact into a reflection on the human condition.
The whole is characterized by a muted palette and diffuse light that emphasizes the texture of the wall.
Presentation
Khaled Hourani is one of the most influential Palestinian multidisciplinary conceptual artists. He is also a curator, writer, and cultural organiser whose practice explores everyday life, movement, borders, and the relationship between art and society. Working across painting, photography, installation, sculpture, and conceptual projects, Hourani often uses familiar objects, situations, and cultural references to consider how political conditions influence everyday experience. His work combines humour, imagination, and critical reflection to question ideas of access, mobility, and cultural exchange.
Born in Hebron in 1965, Hourani studied History at Hebron University in 1987. Alongside his artistic practice, he has held important positions within Palestinian cultural institutions, including the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and the International Academy of Art Palestine. His project Picasso in Palestine, which brought a work by Pablo Picasso to Ramallah in 2011, became an important example of his interest in borders, movement, and access to art. Hourani continues to work as an artist, curator, and cultural organiser across Palestine.
