Description
“Free Within" is a contemporary expressive figurative acrylic painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot.
At the heart of Free Within is a deeply personal moment: the artist depicts herself on the beach, simply enjoying being alive, present and connected to herself. Yet this is not a conventional self-portrait. Natalya Mougenot does not seek to capture her physical appearance or create a literal representation of a particular moment. Instead, she paints the feeling of freedom she experiences within herself.
The woman sits quietly, absorbed in the moment, while the surrounding world seems to dissolve into colour, movement and light. The beach becomes more than a geographical place. It becomes a psychological space — a place where the artist can let go, breathe, reconnect with herself and experience a profound sense of happiness and inner freedom.
This distinction is central to Mougenot's work: the external scene is only the starting point; the real subject is the emotion experienced within it. The figure therefore becomes both the artist herself and a more universal representation of a woman who feels at peace with who she is.
The painting deliberately moves between expressive figuration and abstraction. The body remains recognizable, but its contours are loose and continuously interrupted by energetic marks and unexpected colours. The face is simplified rather than precisely described, allowing the viewer to focus less on identity and more on the emotional state of the figure.
Mougenot uses colour as an emotional language. Coral, orange, pink and magenta bring warmth and sensuality to the figure, while turquoise and deep blues introduce the freshness of the sea and create a powerful contrast. These colours are not intended to reproduce nature realistically. They express how the moment feels to the artist: warm, luminous, joyful and alive.
The visible brushstrokes are equally important. They preserve the immediacy of the experience, giving the painting a sense of movement and spontaneity. Some marks appear to extend beyond the figure and into the surrounding space, subtly suggesting that the woman is not separated from her environment but immersed in it.
There is also a quiet strength in the way the figure occupies the canvas. She is not posing for the viewer. She is existing for herself. Her relaxed posture and turned-away presence create a sense of intimacy and independence. The viewer is invited to witness the moment rather than interrupt it.
The title Free Within refers precisely to this idea: freedom that does not need to be given by the outside world because it already exists inside us. The painting becomes a reflection on inner autonomy, happiness and the ability to find oneself again in simple moments.
In this sense, Free Within belongs naturally to Mougenot's broader exploration of women and femininity. Her women are not simply subjects to be observed; they embody different emotional states, forms of connection and ways of experiencing the world. Here, the woman represents inner freedom, presence and the quiet happiness of being completely oneself.
The work ultimately transforms a personal beach moment into something universal: the memory of a moment when nothing needs to be achieved, explained or controlled — when simply being present is enough.

Presentation
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
