Description
Tulips are some of my favourite flowers. I love how delicate and fragile they look, but at the same time there is so much strength in them — in the firm stems, the closed buds, and the young leaves reaching towards the light.
That was the feeling I wanted to catch in this painting. The background developed slowly and became quite layered and complicated. For me, it carries a more mixed, slightly unsettled mood. Against it, the tulips feel brighter and more alive, but there is still a quiet touch of melancholy in the painting.
I worked very intuitively and changed a lot directly on the canvas. Even when the painting was almost finished, I still felt that something was missing. At the very end, I added one small yellow tulip, and suddenly everything felt right.
When I came back to the studio the next day and looked at it again, I felt that I had finally found what I was looking for — something alive, fragile, slightly tense, and very beautiful.
