Sunlit Haven — Original Fauvist-Inspired Mediterranean Landscape Painting by Natalya Mougenot

Contemporary colourful landscape painting of a Mediterranean village in the South of France, inspired by Henri Matisse, André Derain and Fauvism. Original acrylic on heavyweight professional acid-free paper, 59.4 × 81.5 cm (23.4 × 32.1 in).

Sunlit Haven is an original contemporary landscape painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, inspired by the sunlit landscapes of southern France and, in particular, the picturesque village of Collioure, where Henri Matisse and André Derain helped shape the Fauvist movement in 1905. Through expressive brushwork, bold colour contrasts and simplified forms, the painting captures the warmth, vibrancy and peaceful atmosphere of the Mediterranean.

A winding rose-pink pathway leads the viewer towards a charming village framed by tall, lush vegetation, terracotta-coloured houses and a dramatic range of cobalt-blue mountains. Above the landscape, a softly glowing golden sky evokes the warmth of the southern sun. The oversized plants create a sense of depth and movement, while the winding path invites the eye to travel into the heart of the composition, suggesting a quiet escape into nature.

The influence of Henri Matisse and André Derain is particularly evident in the artist's liberated use of colour and her departure from strict naturalistic representation. Deep blues, vivid greens, luminous yellows and warm pinks become more than descriptions of the landscape: they express its emotional atmosphere. Bold contours and visible brushstrokes lend the work a spontaneous, tactile quality, preserving the energy and freedom of the painting process.

Rather than depicting Collioure as a literal view, Mougenot offers her own expressive interpretation of the South of France. The simplified architecture, rhythmic vegetation and flattened areas of colour recall the spirit of Fauvism, while the softened light and dreamlike perspective introduce a distinctly personal and contemporary sensibility.

Both joyful and contemplative, Sunlit Haven celebrates the beauty of Mediterranean life: the warmth of the sun, the vivid colours of nature and the quiet pleasure of discovering a peaceful corner of the world. It brings a sense of light, movement and artistic freedom to a contemporary interior, making it a distinctive choice for collectors drawn to expressive landscapes, colourful modern art and the enduring influence of Fauvism.

Framing recommendations:

Framing is required for this original painting on paper. The interior photographs showing the artwork framed are for inspiration only; the painting is offered unframed.

To complement its vivid Mediterranean palette, Natalya recommends a slim natural oak frame for a warm, contemporary look, a simple white frame for a fresh, light presentation, or a narrow matte dark-blue frame that echoes the deep blue mountains. A clean, understated design will enhance the painting without competing with its expressive colours and brushwork.

Recommended frame size: 70 × 100 cm (27.6 × 39.4 in), portrait orientation. This is a practical standard size to look for when shopping for a ready-made frame.

As the painting measures 59.4 × 81.5 cm (23.4 × 32.1 in) , a custom-cut mount will be needed to accommodate the artwork correctly and create an attractive border. Ask for a mount with an opening measured specifically for the painting, allowing for the desired overlap, rather than cutting the opening to the exact sheet dimensions.

For a refined, gallery-style finish, choose an acid-free mount and UV-protective glazing or acrylic glazing, with sufficient spacing to prevent the painted surface from touching the glazing. A ready-made 70 × 100 cm frame combined with a suitable mount offers an elegant presentation without requiring a fully bespoke frame.
