Description

Édouard ELZINGRE (1880-1966)

Horse racing

Watercolor and ink on paper
25 × 34 cm without frame
Signed "Ed. Elzingre" in the bottom right
Original work

In this scene of horse racing, Édouard Elzingre captures with remarkable economy of means the momentum of a group of horses launched on the track. The composition, built according to a dynamic diagonal, progressively brings forth the different competitors and vividly reproduces the depth and movement of the race.

The drawing constitutes the essential framework of the work. With a quick and precise line, Elzingre defines the anatomy of the horses, the attitudes of the jockeys, and the tack. The watercolor then intervenes with light and transparent touches: blue, red, yellow, and green punctuate the paper without ever taking precedence over the line.

The subject is particularly representative of the world of Édouard Elzingre. The horse and equestrian manifestations occupy a significant place in his work, both in his original works and in his activity as an illustrator and poster artist. His Parisian training under Emmanuel Frémiet, famous notably for his animal work, also illuminates the assuredness with which he reproduces the anatomy and movement here.

More than a meticulous description of the race, Elzingre seeks to seize the instant, the speed, and the tension. The slightly superimposed silhouettes, the lightness of the colored highlights, and the apparent spontaneity of the line give the scene an impression of immediacy, as if it had been captured in the moment.

This watercolor thus testifies to the qualities that characterize the best of his graphic work: precision of the drawing, a keen sense of movement, and the elegance of the composition.
