Description
The Moon crossing the Sun over Abruzzo, Italy, on 12 August 2026.
The shot lasted a fraction of a second. The work behind it took weeks: studying the path of the eclipse and the position of the Sun at maximum coverage, testing film and exposure, and scouting the area for days to find a clean horizon. I took it from a ridge inside the Calanchi di Atri Nature Reserve, with a Nikon F5 and a 400mm Leicaflex telephoto lens on 35mm negative film.
I printed it by hand in my darkroom on Ilford Multigrade FB Warmtone Matte fiber paper. The matte surface holds a deep black with no reflections, and the warm tone keeps the disc of the Sun soft.
Selenium toned for archival permanence. Limited edition of 10 plus 4 artist's proofs, signed and numbered in pencil, with a Certificate of Authenticity. The framed version comes in a custom-made black lacquered frame with Artglass AR70 anti-reflective glass (70% UV protection), a 30 x 40 cm passepartout and a double hanging bracket. Image size 17.7 x 18 cm on a 24 x 30.5 cm sheet.
Presentation
I'm Francesco Mussida, an Italian fine art photographer and darkroom fine art printer working exclusively with black and white analog processes.
My studio is based in Abruzzo (Italy), I work with vintage cameras, film, and silver gelatin paper.
My main focus is the relationship between humans and the plant world, explored through posture, gesture, and the emotional qualities of form. I aim to reveal not only what nature looks like, but how it feels.
I choose to photograph analog to preserve the natural distance between observer and subject. In a world dominated by speed and control, I value variables: time, light, movements and the imperfections they bring.
