Description
An original embossed print on intaglio cardboard by the renowned Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven.
Signed and dated in pencil lower right: "Schoonhoven 1972".
Titled and numbered in pencil lower left.
This refined embossed print is an outstanding example of Jan Schoonhoven's lifelong exploration of structure, rhythm and light. Created entirely through relief without the use of ink, the composition consists of a meticulously ordered grid of subtle geometric forms.
As the light changes, delicate shadows emerge across the embossed surface, giving the work a quiet yet dynamic presence. The absence of colour directs the viewer's attention entirely to texture, balance and the interaction between light and shadow.
Sheet size: approx. 60 × 50 cm.
The work is offered unframed.
Handmade, custom framing is available upon request through our professional framing workshop, offering a wide range of styles, colors, and materials.
Jan Schoonhoven (1914–1994) is regarded as one of the leading figures of post-war Dutch art. He was a founding member of the Dutch Nul Group and closely associated with the international ZERO movement, alongside artists such as Günther Uecker, Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. His distinctive white reliefs and embossed works sought to eliminate personal expression in favour of structure, repetition and the natural effects of light.
Today, his works are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, and numerous international public and private collections. His embossed prints and reliefs are highly sought after by collectors of post-war European art.
Authenticity and provenance guaranteed.
Delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
Worldwide shipping, tax-friendly to the USA and other countries.
Custom handmade framing available on request.
Presentation
Jan Schoonhoven (1914 - 1994) is considered one of the most important Dutch artists of the 20th century and was a central figure in the Nul movement, closely aligned with the international ZERO group. His works are defined by their absence of emotional expression, focusing instead on repetition, rhythm, and the use of pure white. Despite his growing international reputation, Schoonhoven continued to work as a civil servant in Delft until retirement and often created his artworks in the evenings, using modest materials such as cardboard and papier-mâché.Â
His minimalist works are featured in the collections of major museums, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Guggenheim Museum New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.Â
