Description
This work is a composition of nine ceramic squares, modeled in relief using French red grogged clay; the material's mineral qualities are revealed through the application of layered slips and glazes. Each module features a raised area—projecting about one centimeter—that emphasizes the piece's tactile nature, showcasing smooth surfaces, granular zones, fractures, drips, and precisely crafted textures. The color palette—deep blacks, off-whites, earthy browns, and mineral grays—creates a striking contrast that structures the viewer's perception of the whole.
While the 3×3 grid provides a geometric framework for the composition, an organic abstraction emerges from within: the forms evoke stratigraphic cross-sections, sediment, minerals, and shifting rock formations. Each tile becomes a landscape fragment—an autonomous cell contributing to an overarching rhythm. The density of the fired clay, the variations in relief, and the interplay between matte and glossy finishes create a constant dialogue between controlled geometry and the raw nature of the material.
The assembly is mounted on a Dibond aluminum panel and set within a black aluminum frame, lending an architectural foundation to the organic quality of the squares. This precise metal structure acts as a visual base for the ceramics, reinforcing the relationship between material, light, and structure. Signed on the back and fitted with a secure mounting system, the modules form a sensitive map—a fragmented landscape where earth, fire, and metal converge to create a contemporary, mineral presence.
