Description
The Hands of Mercy according to Caravaggio
Two hands, resin sculptures, positioned on the photograph of Caravaggio's work.
These hands of mercy were made of clay, then in resin. They reproduce the exact movement of the hands of the protective angel in the painting by Caravaggio “The Seven Works of Mercy" exhibited at the Pio Monte museum in Naples.
To take these hands, to give importance to a strong detail of the work is to share a moment of inspiration a few centuries later, it is to enter into its intimacy, its universe and offer another look to bring mercy, protection and sharing.
The classical painting serves as a dark and theatrical backdrop.
The two sculpted hands emerge with remarkable anatomical precision. The movement is striking. A hand stretches upwards while another crosses the frame to enter our space. This play of relief transforms the flat surface into a three-dimensional scene.
The contrast is marked between the depth of the pictorial background and the paleness of the sculpted volumes. The composition plays on tension and anticipation.
The whole questions our relationship to the history of art. The gaze circulates between the painted figures of the painting and its material extensions. The work presents itself as a fragment of a dream frozen in a rectangular frame. Each detail emphasizes the desire to leave the plane to touch the viewer.

He divides his time between his two workshops, one in the Paris region and the other in Brittany.
Reno works with many materials, such as plaster, clay, stone or bronze. He draws inspiration from the sensuality of the bodies, their eroticism and fluid curves to create sculptures that the spectator would believe to be in motion. Women are an important part of his work. From these, he draws his inspiration. Desire is at the origin of all his work, allowing him to give his sculptures the vital impetus he seeks.
