Vhils   Famous Artists

Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, known by his artistic name Vhils, continues to captivate the global art scene with his groundbreaking approach to urban art. His innovative carving technique, which forms the basis of his iconic Scratching the Surface series, remains one of the most influential methods in contemporary street art. Vhils' work has been exhibited internationally, from major art institutions to urban settings, where his powerful visual poetry engages audiences with its raw emotional depth. In recent years, Vhils’ art has garnered critical acclaim, with exhibitions showcasing his exploration of the complex relationship between individuals and their urban environments. His ability to transform urban surfaces into thought-provoking pieces continues to resonate with collectors and art enthusiasts.

Vhils’ work is celebrated for its exploration of the human condition, highlighting the tensions between personal aspirations and the overwhelming forces of the modern city. His carvings, stencils, and mixed-media works, often created in collaboration with the environment itself, offer a stark, yet poetic commentary on the transient and materialistic nature of contemporary life. His pieces have been featured in major international exhibitions, including at the Cans Festival in London and in group shows such as VSP in Lisbon, where his radical approach to visual expression first gained widespread recognition.

Growing up in Seixal, an industrialized suburb of Lisbon, Vhils was profoundly influenced by the rapid urban transformations that reshaped the city in the 1980s and 1990s. His work, which blends elements of graffiti, stencil painting, and even pyrotechnics, has pushed the boundaries of what is considered street art. Vhils has consistently expanded his creative toolkit to include techniques such as 3D modeling, further cementing his reputation as a visionary artist who blends the digital with the tactile.

Today, Vhils’ works are highly sought after by collectors, with his unique approach to vandalism aesthetics sparking conversations about the power of art in public spaces and its capacity to provoke deep reflections on society. His pieces continue to leave a lasting impact on the art market, resonating with those who appreciate both the artistic and social dimensions of his work.
