Something magical is transmitted from Ger Doornink’s eye to ours, through a code that transpires modernity, sensitivity, delicacy and strength at the same time. There are invisible colours that Doornink makes visible, and gazes that are underlined only by an appropriate flash of light. That is why his work, despite being so contemporary, seems to always have existed.
In his series "Japanese Portraits with Rich textures", the contemporary Dutch artist Ger Doornink explores different representations of Japanese women. Doornink lived in Japan when he was a young artist and since then the Japanese culture has always fascinated him. In this series, not only is the first time that he represents Japanese women, but also the first time he experiments with diverse textures. He implements different materials in his canvases to give shape to the clothes of the women depicted and their hair and accessories, making an obvious reference to his previous experience in fashion. Besides, among the materials, one can find Japanese paper and fabric, a beautiful detail bringing the subject of the portrait and the theme even closer together.
This fine art print originates from an original painting made of many layers of oil, acrylic and a mixture of different fabrics on canvas. The original painting is professionally scanned to later be printed on Hahnemühle German Etching paper, ensuring not only a high-quality finish, but also the durability of the colour. The scan is very detailed, to the extend of tricking the eye into thinking there are actual textures on the paper. However, it is all a flat image.
