Contemporary Art: by Scottish artist Peter Doig.
The canoe is one of Doig's most recurring images. In this aquatint, the canoe is part of a vague scenery of shadowlike figures in a foggy but yet colourful environment. There are only silhouettes of the figures against the colourful sunset skies, and numerous questions arise: Who is the shadowy figure in the centre of the boat, is it a sword that he is holding? Why is there a flag bearing the cross of the Order of the Temple? Doig's characteristic message of a borderline experience: never trust your eyes, there could always be a hidden dimension behind what you are seeing.

Presentation
Peter Doig, born on April 17, 1959, in Edinburgh, Scotland, is widely regarded as one of the most significant living figurative painters. Known for his evocative landscapes and dreamlike compositions, Doig's work blends the real with the surreal, often drawing on his experiences from Trinidad, where he has lived since 2002. His paintings explore themes of memory, identity, and the relationship between nature and human presence.
Peter Doig remains a dynamic force in the art world. In 2024, he was featured in several major exhibitions, showcasing his continued exploration of landscape and memory through vivid, textured imagery. His participation in the Venice Biennale 2024 was highly anticipated, where he unveiled new works that continue his dialogue with the environment of Trinidad. The exhibition was praised for its deepening exploration of Caribbean identity and nature, reinforcing Doig's legacy as one of the most important contemporary painters. In 2025, his painting The Pink Lake was sold at Christie's for an impressive $15.8 million, setting a new record for the artist. This sale highlights the ongoing demand for his works.
Doig's early life was marked by travel. In 1962, his family moved to Trinidad, where his father worked for a shipping and trading company. The family then relocated to Canada in 1966. Doig's journey into art began when he moved to London in 1979 to study at the Wimbledon School of Art, followed by the Saint Martin's School of Art from 1980 to 1983. He completed his formal education at the Chelsea School of Art, where he received a Master's degree in 1990. A formative experience during his time in London was his friendship with fellow artist Billy Childish and his work as a dresser at the English National Opera.
Peter Doig's breakthrough moment came in 2007, when his painting White Canoe sold for $11.3 million at Sotheby's, setting an auction record for a living European artist at the time. This was followed by another record-breaking sale in February 2013 when The Architect's Home in the Ravine sold for $12 million at a London auction. These sales cemented Doig's status as one of the world's most sought-after contemporary painters.
Since his return to Trinidad in 2002, Doig has immersed himself in the island's culture and landscapes, which have become a prominent feature in his art. In 2000, he was invited to Trinidad for an artist's residency, alongside his friend and fellow painter Chris Ofili. By 2002, he had moved permanently to the Caribbean, where he set up a studio at the Caribbean Contemporary Arts Center near Port of Spain. In addition to his artistic practice, Doig became a professor at the Fine Arts Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Doig's work continues to resonate across the globe, with a growing interest in how his Caribbean experience intersects with his exploration of memory and the natural world. As one of the most influential painters of his generation, Doig's art remains as relevant and impactful as ever, bridging cultures and time periods with each brushstroke.
