Lottas, Cuaressman (ex. 2/25)

Presentation

Lottas was born in 1973 in Mexico, today he lives and works at Playa del Carmen in Mexico.

He studied painting and graphic art and improved himself alongside renown master printers as Alfredo Mereles from the Taller de Gráfica Popular.

The universe of the artist is nourished with a great knowledge of pre-Columbian civilizations and also makes reference to the popular Mexican culture. He borrows from Mayan and Aztec arts the traditional forms and motifs, as the Tezcatlipoca mask, major divinity of the Aztec pantheon, to which he subtly merges elements evoking the social mores that surrounds him, as gambling activities - suggested by clovers, hearts, spades and diamonds. Skulls, animals, mythological creatures and anatomical hearts represent a large part of his pictorial universe.

The support of Lottas’ etchings are rooted in the Mexican culture. To print his engraved wood and lino cuts, he uses hand-made paper « Amate ». Manufactured in Puebla region, using traditional methods which dates back to the pre-Hispanic period, it is also used by spiritual masters in rituals – it should have magical attributes.

Lottas regularly attends exhibitions in Mexico and South America, his work has also been exhibited in Chicago and London. Recently, a personal exhibition was dedicated to him at the Cozumel museum in Mexico. Since 2014, the gallery Jordan/Seydoux has been exhibiting his etchings in Edition fairs.
