Anne Desbordes De Ribaucourt

Since her childhood, the life of art lover and collector Anne Desbordes De Ribaucourt has been deeply influenced by art. From antique pieces to contemporary paintings, each piece of her diverse art collection is chosen with immense care. Dive into Artsper's profile of this passionate collector!

1. What was your first art acquisition?

My very first art purchase was made in 1990, a few months before the birth of my daughter, from an antiques dealer who specialized in Greco-Roman art in Saint-Paul-de-Venece. A little face of a woman red fired clay, around 5 centimeters in height, which was the only remaining piece of a small Greek Tanagra. The purity of the features and the calm femininity of this face immediately drew me in.

2. Where does your love and interest in art come from?

All this stems from my childhood, since I have always been somewhat immersed in art in general. Both my parents were lovers of painting and sculpture. My father, an architect by training, has always painted and often exhibited, notably at the annual Salon des Indépendants after the Second World War and into the 1970s. I studied at art school (Beaux-Arts and then ESAA in Paris, with a simultaneous course at the École du Louvre), to carry out my entire career in the teaching of Applied Arts and Art History. I couldn't be more involved in art!

3. How would you describe your current collection?

I would say that my collection is quite diverse, because in addition to paintings and drawings, I also like sculpture and decorative objects. Unfortunately, I don't have the space to display everything at once, so with sculptures for example, I "rotate" my pieces from time to time so as to get the most out of each one.

For paintings, it's different, in that I have my favorites, and they are part of the mood within an interior design that I like. Through their size, their location, they are in harmony with furniture and related color harmonies, so I leave them exhibited all the time.

4. Which artists inspire you? Any pieces you dream of acquiring?

I don't have a favorite artist, even though I have been lucky enough to meet some famous and talented painters through my parents. I have always chosen art based on love at first sight, regardless of whether it is figurative or not. A composition, a set of colors and materials or a richness of technique(s) can immediately catch my eye and make me want to buy a work. No matter the subject, the theme, it is these factors that will catch my eye, registering within me as something I need to own.

I remember one particular instance. About ten years ago, I stopped by a bistro in St Germain des Prés to have a sandwich and a coffee. In this very bistro, the owners were exhibiting young talented artists for free. By chance I sat down in front of one of these paintings, painted by an artist I did not yet know... While eating my sandwich, I looked at this acrylic painting on the wall in front of me, feeling increasingly somehow "called" to it.

I came back twice to see this work again and finally to buy it…

5. What does your collection bring to your home? Where do you display your artworks?

My home is a much needed haven of peace, where I need to find a sense of familiar well-being and harmony. The various works of art that are in my home are reminders of the positive and pleasant moments when I discovered them. They are also memories of happy times and journeys, even of pure joy. It is not so much the fact of owning a work as the fact of thinking back to the attraction for me and the pleasure of being able to admire it whenever I want. These are positive vibes for me, and I need them. I can find these vibes everywhere in my home, from my kitchen to the living room, through the bedrooms and the office. One day I would like to have them in my garden too. Why not?

6. You have already purchased several works on Artsper, what made you decide to take the plunge?

I came across Artsper by chance on the web. I found it very interesting that you offer an extremely wide selection of works, in relation to gallery owners located in various places that I would not have otherwise had the opportunity to visit. I started to regularly browse your online catalog, and of course, I was in love. The presentation of the artists and their background, the various perspectives of the works, the clarity of the associated technical information, are all parameters that facilitate the choice and provide reassurance through their reliability. The blog articles published in the newsletters are also very interesting and provide additional information for connoisseurs as well as for novices who wish to learn more.

7. How have you found your experience with Artsper?

I have never been disappointed with Artsper. Everything has always been done with the utmost respect for me as a customer, and the people on the team that I have had the opportunity to contact by phone for more information have always been efficient and extremely friendly. I was also able to get to know some of the gallery owners, which is very interesting.

8. Finally, what advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to buy their first piece of art?

There is a saying that taste and color are not up for discussion, and that is a given.

But my one and only piece of advice would be to tell someone to do what I do because it is the most important thing: to follow your heart.

Not because my opinion is the best, but simply because it seems to me to be fundamental that each person, when faced with an artwork that they are debating whether to buy it, asks themselves the question of whether or not they feel a strong attraction to the piece. But take your time, perhaps by coming back to it later, in order to make a more informed decision. Its signification comes from the fact that it responds to our sensibility, making it entirely personal.
