Description

This 60 cm square painting, entitled "Nage entre deux eaux", is part of a minimalist and abstract geometric approach. At first glance, it exudes a profound serenity, thanks to its soothing shades of blue and subtle textures that evoke the calm surface of water. However, behind this apparent tranquility, the work reveals an underlying tension, an invisible dynamic.

The ever-changing shades of blue symbolize the forces of change and adaptation. The work thus reflects the duality of our times: a calm on the surface, but profound upheavals that require constant reinvention. Like swimming between two waters, the individual must navigate between stability and uncertainty, adapting to the flows of a world in perpetual motion. This contrast between apparent calm and inner turmoil echoes the complexity of the transitions we are experiencing, where stability is only an illusion and where each movement hides an invisible struggle.

The technique of abstract pointillism seems to be at the base of this work, where thousands of individual touches of blue overlap and blend to create a visual harmony. Each point, whether lighter or darker, acts like a wave in a vast ocean of color, contributing to the feeling of flow and movement. The alternation between darker and brighter hues creates areas of contrast that recall the underlying currents in water, suggesting a three-dimensional space despite the flat surface of the canvas.

The artist also uses the subtle gradient of tones, passing from deep blue to light blue with an almost imperceptible fluidity. This choice of monochrome palette, with infinitesimal variations, reinforces the idea of an apparent but deceptive harmony, where each tonal variation symbolizes a tension hidden under a calm surface.

Finally, the treatment of light plays a crucial role in this work. The reflections and flashes of light that seem to emanate from certain areas create an impression of scintillation, as if the light were reflecting on a moving aqueous surface. This controlled use of luminosity reinforces the connection between the work and the element of water, further emphasizing the idea of constant transformation.

By combining these techniques, the artist manages to capture not only the aesthetics of water, but also the metaphor of change and adaptation through a composition that is both simple and extraordinarily detailed.

Presentation

In the light of the Masters…

For lovers of art history, Gaëlle Wagner's work is part of the continuity of the great explorations of abstraction, from Monet to Klimt, from Pollock to Rothko. Nourished by this heritage, she develops a singular pictorial language, where composition, material, and color open up a renewed view of the sensible world.

In the Concrete Abstractions of Gaëlle Wagner, each work is born from a rigorously constructed composition made up of photographic fragments. This structure constitutes the foundation upon which the artist builds to develop her work. She progressively superimposes projections and runs to enrich the pictorial surface and gradually give it density. The artist conducts a deep reflection on pigment, color, light, and their interactions. Gravity and natural phenomena, which might seem to guide the painting, are integrated into this process without ever taking precedence over the artist's will.

Because, for Gaëlle Wagner, it is above all about building, through her technique, a sensory experience. The underlying structure of the work and its progressive enrichment become the guiding thread that accompanies the viewer towards a state of presence and attention.

Her approach is inspired by the way nature organizes its own forms. In a landscape, a rock, a sky, or a sea bottom, nothing exists in isolation: each element takes meaning through the relationships it maintains with the others. It is this logic of interdependence that the artist transposes into her painting. Colors are never thought of separately; they exist one for the other, building images that evoke horizons, mineral phenomena, or aquatic depths, without ever seeking to illustrate them, but rather to bring forth the memory, the impression, or the evocation.

Up close, the eye discovers the richness of the material, the nuances and interactions between the pigments. From a distance, these elements unite into a coherent image, where each part becomes indispensable to the balance of the whole.

This double reading is at the heart of her work. It invites the viewer to a sensory experience, between abstraction and reminiscence, where what nature reveals meets what it leaves suspended. The artist always works with purpose, guiding the gaze towards what she calls a Concrete Abstraction.

Presented in many personal and collective exhibitions, Gaëlle Wagner also creates live painting performances on monumental formats. Her works are now in private collections in France, Europe, and the United States.
