In this original work from 2022, Gérard Boersma stages a woman contemplating an image from the provocative and immediately recognizable universe of Banksy.

In the foreground, the spectator turns their back to us. Her red dress and long brown hair contrast sharply with the graphic sobriety of the work she is observing: a monkey figure treated almost exclusively in black and white.

This opposition between figurative painting and stencil aesthetic, between color and monochrome, constitutes one of the great strengths of the composition.

Boersma reuses here the device that characterizes an essential part of his work: the spectator becomes the subject of the work itself.

We are no longer simply facing a reference to Banksy. We are observing the silent reaction of a woman in front of this image.

The composition then creates a double reading. The monkey seems to occupy the space with an almost theatrical presence while the young woman, much more realistic, belongs to our world. Two artistic languages meet in the same painting.

With great economy of colors—white, black, brown, and red—Boersma achieves a particularly graphic and immediately identifiable image.

In this intimate format of 20 × 20 cm, the artist brings together contemporary figurative painting, urban culture, and one of the most famous visual signatures of street art.

She stopped in front of it.

A monkey.

Black on white.

A simple, almost raw image that nonetheless possesses that quality specific to street art: it challenges us even before we have decided to look at it.

The woman remains still.

Her red dress contrasts with the black of the image. Two worlds seem to face each other: that of traditional painting and that of urban stencil art.

But Gérard Boersma adds a third protagonist to this encounter.

Us.

The woman looks at Banksy.

And we look at the woman looking at Banksy.

Boersma then transforms a scene of contemplation into a reflection on our fascination with these images that have become icons of contemporary culture.

The monkey belongs to the work she is contemplating.

The woman belongs to Boersma's work.

And our gaze unites the two.

Born in 1976 in the Netherlands, Gérard Boersma has been developing a figurative painting centered notably on our relationship to art, images, and contemporary society for more than twenty-five years.

Museums and galleries hold a particular place in his work. His characters, frequently depicted from behind in front of iconic works, create an immediately recognizable device: Boersma paints both the one who looks and what is looked at.

His compositions thus establish bridges between figurative painting, art history, Pop Art, and contemporary urban culture.

His work benefits from international distribution and is featured in private and public collections in many countries. Gérard Boersma lives and works in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.

Presentation

Artist Statement from Gerard Boersma: I create colorful and highly detailed works of art to express my love for the modern human as well as my concerns about contemporary city life. My hyperreal paintings are based on photographs I took during long walks through my hometown and major cities. They show people on the streets, in stores, public transport and museums or zoom in on popular products. To me these glimpses of everyday live are important as they say a whole lot about todays society. They show the way people see themselves, interact or are influenced by modern developments in various ways. I observe it, enlarge it and paint it. That way I freeze time and our fast and busy lives are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly.

Biography I'm a professional and international recognized artist for over 20 years well known for my own style of realist painting. My art is in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide (North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa). Paintings were shown alongside the biggest names in art history at leading art fairs in Europe and United States. I've studied painting and fine art at the School of Arts Minerva in the Netherlands, specializing in meticulous form of realistic painting. I currently live and work in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.
