Description
Distich reduces the built environment to a few stark, monumental forms. An isolated structure rises against an almost depthless night sky, its pale surfaces exposed against the surrounding darkness. The extreme simplicity of the composition creates a sense of stillness that is less peaceful than absolute. Familiar architecture becomes strange and solitary, suggesting permanence, isolation and the limits of the spaces we inhabit.
Presentation
Marcus Freeman was born and brought up in Cambridge. He moved to London to study at the former Hornsey School of Art, now part of Middlesex University. After graduating he worked in commercial design while developing his practice as a fine artist.
He chiefly produces acrylic paintings of abstracted urban landscapes and studies of the built environment in other media that explore the contradiction between clarity and atmosphere and our changing attitudes to hope and progress.
