Description
Strength takes shape through flowing lines and quiet colour.
Created in 2023, Spirit of the Bison is a unique acrylic and pigment painting by Latvian artist Inna Pupina. Across its generous horizontal format, grey, ivory, sand and gold-toned accents create an abstract composition with a powerful yet measured presence.
FORMS THAT HOLD THEIR GROUND
Large curving shapes extend through the canvas, outlined by fine black lines. Their contours suggest fragments of bodies, stone surfaces or an imagined landscape, without settling into a single recognisable image.
The palette balances cool slate tones with warm cream and beige. White passages introduce brightness, while darker areas give the composition substance. Irregular golden accents illuminate selected edges, creating points of discovery throughout the painting.
Fine trails, splashes and layered brushwork interrupt the larger shapes. These details bring a sense of movement to a composition whose underlying rhythm remains calm and grounded.
AN OPEN ENCOUNTER WITH THE TITLE
Spirit of the Bison invites an association with endurance, physical presence and the natural world. These qualities emerge through the painting's broad forms and visual weight, rather than through a literal depiction of the animal.
From a distance, the work offers a clear architectural rhythm. Seen closely, its smaller marks and variations reveal a more intimate, changing surface. This movement between scale and detail gives the painting its contemplative character.

Presentation
Inna Pupina is a contemporary painter whose practice centres on the emotional life of landscape. Working exclusively in acrylic on canvas, she develops compositions that move beyond topographical description toward atmosphere, sensation and inner experience.
Her signature approach combines expressive layering, refined colour harmonies and a sustained attention to light — particularly the luminous, shifting quality of Nordic and Eastern European natural environments. Forests, water and sky recur throughout her work not as subjects to be recorded, but as vehicles for contemplating stillness, time and the passage between states.
Pupina's paintings are characterised by their chromatic depth: violets, blues and greens are built through successive transparent glazes, generating a sense of visual resonance that photographs rarely capture in full. The surface holds both spontaneity and control — gestural passages sit alongside areas of quiet precision, creating compositions that reward sustained looking.
Represented by Abstract Art Gallery since 2013, Inna Pupina's original works are held in private collections across Europe. Her paintings are appreciated for their capacity to transform a domestic or professional interior into a space of contemplation — present without being intrusive, decorative without being passive.
She exhibits internationally and continues to develop her practice from her studio in Riga, Latvia.
