Description
You recognise them before you have even noticed a single brick. R2-D2 in the foreground, stocky, leaning on his three legs. C-3PO behind him, standing with his hands on his hips, wearing that familiar air of reproach. The droid duo from , inseparable since 1977, needs no setting to exist: the title says it all, friends for ever.
Everything sets the two characters apart, and the build underlines it. R2-D2 is a pale mass, constructed in white, ivory and cream, cut through by panels of cobalt blue, navy and purple, beneath a grey and blue dome. C-3PO poses a real challenge: how do you make gold out of bricks? Brick Board Builder's answer is a blend of browns, caramel, beige and cream, flecked with hundreds of lime green and bright yellow dots. Up close, you see only touches. From a distance, the eye merges them into metallic reflections, and the armour starts to shine.
The background plays the opposite role. It is a plain, smooth mauve, without a single brick, barely darkened at the bottom to suggest the floor. The two droids stand out from it in relief, almost like a sculpture hung on the wall. One detail ties it all together: small lavender dots, scattered across R2-D2's white body, carry the colour of the background into the subject.
Up close, the characters dissolve into plates, tiles, round pieces and Technic elements, stacked on several levels. Look for the small orange stars slipped into C-3PO's armour: in this galaxy, they had to be there.
Two machines rebuilt piece by piece: subject and method meet. Brick Board Builder assembles by hand, without a predefined blueprint, LEGO® bricks that are all reclaimed, which arrived loose from all over France, some thanks to the solidarity-based non-profit Rejoué, and were then cleaned and sorted one by one. No plan could ever allow Friends for Ever to be remade identically.
A one-of-a-kind piece, numbered, bearing the artist's plaque and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
The art of pixel pop.
“I deal with the constraints of brick as others deal with painting."
Gregory, aka BBB, doesn't paint: he builds. Brick by brick, pixel by pixel, he assembles art with patience, precision... and a certain playfulness.
Trained in interior architecture and technical drawing, he diverts LEGO – a universal, almost childlike material – to create a unique, vibrant, unexpected visual language.
His works combine technical rigor, subtle narrative, and nods to pop culture. From afar, a familiar image. Up close, a complex world. What he creates are slow surprises. Each painting reveals itself in two stages: first the obvious, then the strangeness, the detail, the hidden emotion.
It's an art of patience and pixels, a meticulous construction game that thwarts our perception. BBB revisits icons of contemporary visual culture—mythical characters, musical figures, popular heroes—and slips into them his own grammar, made of rhythm, silence, and graphic tension. He doesn't play with LEGO. He plays with complexity. With our gaze. With the pleasure of revealing the unexpected.
