This is the most radical piece in the studio. Where Brick Board Builder usually fills every centimeter of its frame, it builds almost nothing here — a lock of hair, an eyebrow, a cheek, a mouth, a chin. Five or six white fragments, placed in an absolute black, separated by void. Nothing connects them. And yet the face is there, complete, indisputable.
It is that the work is not played on the canvas but in the eye of the one who looks. Our brain is such that it cannot bear an unfinished form: it fills in, it closes, it reconstructs. BBB exploits this reflex with surgical precision — each fragment is placed in the exact spot where light would hit a real face, and the black takes care of the rest. The painting does not show a portrait: it triggers one.
The palette is reduced to the extreme. Off-whites, ivories, pearl gray, a few bluish grays in the transitions: no color, no effect, nothing to distract. The chosen pieces are flat, smooth, sharp, placed horizontally to catch the light like strokes of white paint on a black background. The lock of hair, at the top, starts with a soft movement; the arch and eyebrow draw a single taut line; the upper lip and lower lip are treated separately, leaving a void between them that is enough to make a mouth.
What strikes, in the end, is the generosity of silence. Three-quarters of the surface bears no brick. On a BBB painting, this is a gesture: that of a builder who accepts not to build, and who trusts the gaze.
No brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was chosen by hand, from a stock of used LEGO® bricks arriving in bulk from all over France and sorted one by one — some of which come from solidarity reuse through the association Rejoué. Pieces without history that find their own. On such a bare background, the slightest misplaced piece would make the illusion collapse: this work can never be remade identically.
No impression, no reproduction, no artificial intelligence. A constructed work, numbered and delivered with its certificate of authenticity, framed and signed on the back.
The art of pixel pop.
“I deal with the constraints of brick as others deal with painting."
Gregory, aka BBB, doesn't paint: he builds. Brick by brick, pixel by pixel, he assembles art with patience, precision... and a certain playfulness.
Trained in interior architecture and technical drawing, he diverts LEGO – a universal, almost childlike material – to create a unique, vibrant, unexpected visual language.
His works combine technical rigor, subtle narrative, and nods to pop culture. From afar, a familiar image. Up close, a complex world. What he creates are slow surprises. Each painting reveals itself in two stages: first the obvious, then the strangeness, the detail, the hidden emotion.
It's an art of patience and pixels, a meticulous construction game that thwarts our perception. BBB revisits icons of contemporary visual culture—mythical characters, musical figures, popular heroes—and slips into them his own grammar, made of rhythm, silence, and graphic tension. He doesn't play with LEGO. He plays with complexity. With our gaze. With the pleasure of revealing the unexpected.
