Description
From a distance, you hesitate. A lava flow, a nebula, a blaze? The title settles it: this is New York, at night, seen from the sky. A city no longer drawn by its buildings but by its light, and one that Brick Board Builder has chosen to bring to red heat. No skyline, no monument, no postcard landmark: only the energy of a metropolis that never switches off.
The composition rests on a single line of force. An incandescent artery runs down the vertical format from top to bottom, orange where it begins, white-hot at its centre (pinks, pale yellows, beiges that are almost white), before widening at the bottom left into a great sheet of bright red. Around it, the night is not black: it is brown, dense, flecked with navy blue, dark green and purple. Here and there, flashes of azure and turquoise cool the whole, like signs, screens or lit rooftops glimpsed from a plane window.
Up close, the city disappears and the material takes over. The red is no longer a flat colour but a relief: plates, smooth tiles, round pieces, Technic bricks with holes and slopes are layered on several levels and catch the light differently depending on the time of day. You have to move in to find the small pink flowers, the orange stars and the unexpected pieces slipped into the grid, the ones the eye only catches at second glance.
As always with Brick Board Builder, no plan came before the build. Each brick was chosen by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® pieces, which arrived loose from all over France and were cleaned and then sorted one by one, some of them thanks to Rejoué, a non-profit dedicated to solidarity-based toy reuse. It is this work without a blueprint that gives NYC Red its grain and its irregularity: the piece can never be remade identically.
Neither a print nor a reproduction: a one-of-a-kind work, built brick by brick, numbered and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
The art of pixel pop.
“I deal with the constraints of brick as others deal with painting."
Gregory, aka BBB, doesn't paint: he builds. Brick by brick, pixel by pixel, he assembles art with patience, precision... and a certain playfulness.
Trained in interior architecture and technical drawing, he diverts LEGO – a universal, almost childlike material – to create a unique, vibrant, unexpected visual language.
His works combine technical rigor, subtle narrative, and nods to pop culture. From afar, a familiar image. Up close, a complex world. What he creates are slow surprises. Each painting reveals itself in two stages: first the obvious, then the strangeness, the detail, the hidden emotion.
It's an art of patience and pixels, a meticulous construction game that thwarts our perception. BBB revisits icons of contemporary visual culture—mythical characters, musical figures, popular heroes—and slips into them his own grammar, made of rhythm, silence, and graphic tension. He doesn't play with LEGO. He plays with complexity. With our gaze. With the pleasure of revealing the unexpected.
