Description
Square format, head-on framing, no way out. The face fills the piece from edge to edge, set just slightly off-center to the left, and stares at you without blinking. This is not a hero's portrait: it's a face-off.
The white of the makeup is what this piece is really about. It would have been easy to lay it down as a flat block of color, and Brick Board Builder does exactly the opposite. The greasepaint is cracked, dirtied, shot through with blues, grays, mauves, beiges and browns, like paint slapped on in a hurry and already starting to flake. Nothing stays put. You can sense the skin beneath, the dark circles, the exhaustion. This is makeup that doesn't conceal: it reveals.
Then come the two warm zones. Around the eye, a halo of deep reds and acid pinks spreads like a bruise. Lower down, the mouth spills far beyond the lips, in a mass of dark reds, oranges and fuchsia that runs from one cheek to the other. This smile isn't drawn, it's spilled, and it is precisely that overflow, that inability to stay inside the lines, that makes the character so unsettling.
On the right, darkness takes up a third of the piece. And this is where the patient eye is rewarded: in that black, dozens of small green bricks, scattered like sparks, along with a few touches of orange, pink and brown. A green that belongs to nothing you can see, only to what you know about the character. You have to step closer to make them out, and once you've seen them, they're all you can see.
Not a single brick was placed according to a plan. Every piece was chosen by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks that arrived in bulk from all over France and were sorted one by one, some of them sourced through charitable reuse thanks to the non-profit Rejoué. Pieces with no story, given one again. It is this refusal to follow a blueprint that gives the work its grain, its irregularity and its identity: it can never be remade identically.
No print, no reproduction, no artificial intelligence. A work that is built, numbered, signed on the back and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
Presentation
The art of pixel pop.
“I deal with the constraints of brick as others deal with painting."
Gregory, aka BBB, doesn't paint: he builds. Brick by brick, pixel by pixel, he assembles art with patience, precision... and a certain playfulness.
Trained in interior architecture and technical drawing, he diverts LEGO – a universal, almost childlike material – to create a unique, vibrant, unexpected visual language.
His works combine technical rigor, subtle narrative, and nods to pop culture. From afar, a familiar image. Up close, a complex world. What he creates are slow surprises. Each painting reveals itself in two stages: first the obvious, then the strangeness, the detail, the hidden emotion.
It's an art of patience and pixels, a meticulous construction game that thwarts our perception. BBB revisits icons of contemporary visual culture—mythical characters, musical figures, popular heroes—and slips into them his own grammar, made of rhythm, silence, and graphic tension. He doesn't play with LEGO. He plays with complexity. With our gaze. With the pleasure of revealing the unexpected.
