Description
In this striking abstract composition, London-based Ukrainian artist and photographer Yeva Kholopova explores the expressive potential of geometric form, light, and chromatic intensity. A luminous structure in tones of amber, orange, and scarlet emerges against a deep black field. Asymmetric angular planes converge and overlap, producing a dynamic architecture that evokes both structural precision and the organic vitality of an incandescence. Subtle gradations between yellow, amber, and deep red lend a radiant, interior glow to the surface, while the principal diagonal appears to pierce the spatial void, introducing directional tension and kinetic energy.
Kholopova's deliberate restraint heightens the drama of the composition: the surrounding darkness functions not as passive negative space, but as an active chromatic field against which the core geometry resonates. The dialogue between obscurity and radiance, stability and velocity, lends psychological tension to the image. Resisting literal representation, the work oscillates between absolute non-objective precision and elusive visual associations — projected beams, crystalline facets, or an imagined architectural threshold.
Contextually, this composition engages the heritage of the early twentieth-century avant-garde, particularly the spatial and dynamic theories of the Ukrainian avant-garde (exemplified by Oleksandr Bohomazov and Kazimir Malevich), alongside the broader Constructivist investigations of planar rhythm. Yet Kholopova departs from early modernist painting by replacing opaque pigment with the intangible fluidity of light, achieving an atmospheric, luminous depth uniquely attuned to contemporary vision.
