Description
The smooth form, carved in poplar, was sanded and coated in a transparent white wax. This thin top layer gives the piece a lasting whiteness while only partially veiling the wood's natural grain figure. Existing quietly behind the perceived duality of the form is an overall unity, represented not only by the asymmetrical balance maintained between the two parts but also by their physical connectedness—being carved from a single block of wood.
Similar to the Bipod series, where there is also to be found a balanced harmony encompassing an interplay of subtle tension, the Duality series typically involves a concavity in one part which communicates and unites with its neighbouring round form. In Duality No.11 the concavity is subtle, echoing the rest of the piece which as a whole possesses a gentle softness culminating in a sweet sense of innocent charm.
The sculpture was carved with hand tools, like saws, knives, rasps and files; finalized by sanding before waxing. This piece, although designed for front viewing, can be rotated to present different faces of the artwork. The back of the piece possesses a particularly pleasant flow of grain and form. The sculpture is versatile with regards to lighting arrangements and will benefit from some shadow play (as seen in the photos). Consider a midtone base and backdrop or an all-white decor.
Placement, Care and Shipping:
The piece is signed on the bottom including the year of creation. The surface is the natural wood, coated with a transparent layer of hard white wax. Dust with a soft cloth and keep a reasonable distance from heat sources. Ships in a well protected box.

Presentation
Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
