Artistic approach

I would like to present a project entitled The Spatial Landscape, created between 2017 and 2020. This project uses video and pictorial media. It is divided into three parts.

This project was carried out in three different urban settings: Lille, Chengdu, and Paris. Having graduated from the École Supérieure d'Art du Nord-Pas-de-Calais Dunkerque-Tourcoing in 2019, I moved to Paris in 2020, where I am a resident at the Open Bach. During the lockdown period, I was able to explore a new way of thinking through the connection established between individual interior space and the political-civilizational framework.

The Spatial Landscape explores art, science, archaeology, astronomy, and science fiction literature. The project presents a range of protean media, including drawing, painting, photography, video, and installation. Its exhibition itself is augmented by that of the artist's work table.

After reading Yuval Noah Harari's book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, I wondered: What will the future of human civilization be like?

How will future human beings look back on the civilization of our time?

After graduating, I started the Spatial Landscape project, with a first installation, carried out in Chengdu, Sichuan.

The second stage of the project began during the lockdown during the pandemic. By combining the photos from the previous installation with 3D geometric shapes, I was able to grasp a new editing technique. This series, in fact, presents a poetic 2D space confronted with images of reality. The brutal irregularity between the image and reality reflects the same shock produced by the interruption of our lives that the virus has caused. This, an unknown and invisible element within men, has

The theme of space is a recurring theme in my artistic approach, particularly through my travel experiences and upon my arrival in France. For Paysage spatial, I was indeed inspired by my reflections on space, particularly after reading the work of Elsa de Smet, in which she questions the apprehension of space in the creations of artists from the Barbizon school. Her studies on spatiality are a wealth of inspiration for my own explorations of astronomical aesthetics.

My inspirations for this project are the Chinese artist Shi Tao, calligrapher, poet and landscape painter, as well as Francis Bacon, Kandinsky, Yan Pingming and Julie Mehretu.

Han Qi, Le paysage spatial II
China  • 1989

Presentation

Born in 1989 in Shenyang, China.

Lives and works between China and France, QI Han is originally from Shenyang, a city in northern China. He was introduced to contemporary art during his studies in Dalian (China). QI Han's artistic creations are mainly painting. Being greatly influenced by the concept "the imagination of northern culture" proposed by the artists representing the Northern Art Group in the 85 'Artistic New Trend movement at the beginning of contemporary Chinese art, he expresses rationality in his works. , coldness and indifference by studying the mysterious power of the culture of North China.

In 2014, after arriving in France, he began to create video works. As he also lives and studies in the north of France, his visual memory of the environment where he grew up meets the aesthetic tradition of architecture and religious painting of the Flemish region, as well as the icy and hazy climate. North. This gives QI Han a unique artistic experience to explore the "cold aesthetic".

In 2017, QI Han participated in the AR + image sector between the École Supérieure d'Art du Nord-Pas-de Calais and Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts. QI Han started to use multimedia in his works, in which there are some installations and performances. During this period, QI Han directed its creation towards the interdisciplinary field of art and science, especially with regard to interstellar space. Subsequently, he created the series "The spatial landscape" which includes painting, installation, video.

QI Han is also deeply influenced by the artistic conception of Chinese landscape painting proposed by the Chinese painter SHI TAO (1642-1707) of the QING dynasty. He refers a lot to Hieronymus Bosch, René Magritte, Philip K. Dick, and Stanley Kubrick. The character of QI Han's works consists of elements of science fiction, mysticism and surrealism.
