This photograph is part of a series entitled "The Distance of Absence", composed of 20 striking photos taken with the Olympus Pen. The Olympus Pen is an iconic half-format* camera, loved for its ability to capture high-quality images while being compact and lightweight. This camera, first introduced in 1959, revolutionized street photography by providing photographers with greater mobility and discretion.
The series “The Distance of Absence" focuses on scenes of urban life, exploring the poetry and melancholy of the city through frozen moments. This photo, titled “Defense," is a perfect example. It captures an architectural detail decorated with climbing ivy leaves, and the inscription "Defense" painted on the stone, evoking both a prohibition and a feeling of protection.
The image subtly plays with contrasts and texture, creating a timeless atmosphere that invites reflection on the traces left by the passage of time and absence. The distinctive grain and black and white reinforce the feeling of nostalgia and timelessness, typical of photos taken with the Olympus Pen.
This work is more than just a street photo; it is an invitation to meditate on urban space, presence and absence, and the way in which we interact with our daily environment.
A photographer for 28 years at the INRAE Communications Department, Bertrand Nicolas regularly publishes his images of scientific reports and illustrations in newspapers and magazines such as Le Figaro, Science & Vie, and Nature Biotechnology. Influenced by his training in visual arts, his personal work is distinguished by a variety of techniques and the use of unique media such as expired film and snapshot transfers.
*half format definition: A "half format" camera means that the film stock used is that of film in order to obtain two photos on each frame of standard 35 mm film. Instead of producing a single 36x24mm image per frame, a half-format camera produces two 18x24mm images.

This seller rewards your purchases of multiple artworks
Originally from Yonne where I lived until my baccalaureate, I continued my studies at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Angers, graduating in 1991. I have been a photographer for 28 years at the Communications Department of INRAE (National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment).
I regularly publish my images of scientific reports and illustrations in the daily press (Le Journal Du Dimanche, Le Figaro, Le Monde, Le Daily des Médecins), magazines (Science & Vie, La Recherche, Biofutur) as well as in specialized scientific journals (Nature Biotechnology, Trends in Genetics).
Without predilection for a particular genre, I like to alternate techniques in my personal photographic work. Very influenced by my training in visual arts (notably with the painter Jean-Pierre PINCEMIN), the support of my images (expired films, transfers of snapshots, etc.) is often the starting point of my approach.
