Dans les années 1830, Nièpce trouve le procédé pour fixer des images sur des plaques d'étain. À son décès en 1833, Louis Daguerre puis François Arago prolongent ses recherches pour inventer le daguerréotype. Cet outil novateur imprime une image sur une plaque d'argent exposée à la lumière. C'est la naissance de la photographie.
Contrairement à la peinture de nu qui est immédiatement considérée comme une pratique artistique, la photographie de nu est d'abord utilisée à des fins scientifiques. Aux Beaux-Arts, de nombreux cours d'anatomie sont donnés et la photographie devient un moyen de plus en plus populaire de représenter les corps. Des clichés ont même été retrouvés à Orsay où des carrés sont tracés sur les corps nus pour en figer les proportions et faciliter la reproduction de ceux-ci en dessin.
Au début du 20ème siècle, des revues commencent à publier des nus. La revue « L'étude Académique », par exemple, publie de la photographie nu vouées à se substituer aux modèles vivants en peinture. La photographie n'est pas encore considérée comme de l'art à ce stade, elle est anonyme et sert plutôt de support aux artistes pour représenter des corps. Pourtant, quelques années plus tôt, de nombreux magazines érotiques sont déjà diffusé malgré une production freinée par la censure.
La photographie nu masculin, plus rare que le nu féminin, se manifeste au départ à travers des clichés de Albert Londe, Thomas Eakins ou encore Vincenzo Galdi, pris en extérieur et capturant les corps de jeunes éphèbes. Dans les années 30 et les années 40, les photographes de l'époque : Man Ray, Jean Ferrero ou encore Gregor Arax se tournent vers une image plus virile et plus raffinée.
Les nus contemporains prennent plusieurs formes. On pourrait s'attendre à des atmosphères exclusivement érotiques mais en réalité, le corps est abordé de manière différente selon le photographe. Jeff Koons, comme à son habitude, joue plutôt sur le terrain de la provocation licencieuse et capture des situations pornographiques, Spencer Tunick met en scène des centaines de corps pour créer un tableau. Quand à Peter Joël Witkin, l'exploration du nu se fait à travers l'horreur et le bizarre. Parmi les maîtres de la photographie de nu, on peut citer Nan Goldin et ses photos décadentes, Araki en noir et blanc, Anders Petersen et ses scènes intimes, ou encore les nus masculins de Mapplethorpe...

Pourquoi tant d'œuvres d'art montrent des nus ?
La représentation du corps humain nu dans l'art est, pour de nombreux artistes, un moyen d'exprimer la beauté du corps humain ainsi que des sentiments et des émotions. La représentation du nu dans l'art est une tradition ancienne ; la plus ancienne représentation connue d'une figure nue, une petite sculpture taillée dans une défense de mammouth laineux, remonte à 35 000 ans.
Qui est un célèbre photographe de nus ?
L'un des plus célèbres photographes de nu est Alfred Stieglitz, un photographe américain dont la carrière s'est étendue sur la première moitié du 20ème siècle. Certaines de ses œuvres de nu les plus célèbres sont celles de son amante, la célèbre artiste Georgia O'Keeffe.
Quels sont les premiers exemples de photographie de nu ?
Contrairement aux peintures de personnages nus, qui relevaient du domaine artistique dès les premiers exemples, la photographie de nu a commencé à être utilisée dans les domaines de la science et de l'éducation. La photographie de nu a ensuite été introduite dans le monde de l'art comme un moyen alternatif de représenter le corps humain.
