This exhibition brings together the recent works of three photographers with singular visions. The same medium, photography, but three gazes, three sensitivities, and three ways of writing with light and image.
Joël Bardeau, the director.
Starting from the writings of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, composed in the early fourteenth century, Joël Bardeau appropriates the first part of the work, Hell, which he transposes into a series of staged photographs. Bodies intertwine, confront, surrender, oscillating between ecstasy and suffering. Eroticism and death traverse this masterful work, where every image becomes a theater of human passions.
Jean-Louis Corpron, the painter.
With Jean-Louis Corpron, photography approaches painting. His images, of remarkable composition, play with light like a painter with his palette. Skillfully orchestrated, the light reveals forms, materials, and silences, giving each photograph a deeply poetic dimension. The force and density of his work impose silence and invite contemplation.
Nick Danziger, the reporter.
Globally renowned Anglo-American photographer, Nick Danziger has traveled the four corners of the world for decades, from Australia to Tibet, from Central Asia to South America. Whether photographing indigenous peoples or populations facing difficult social and economic realities, his gaze is primarily on the individuals. He seeks to capture a presence, a history, a personality—something of the soul of those he meets.
With THE BRITISH, the series presented here, Danziger directs his gaze toward his own country. With humor, tenderness, and sometimes a touch of irony, his photographs create a portrait as unexpected as it is sensitive of the British people. Behind the situations and the characters, an entire society is revealed.
Three photographers, three writings, three worldviews.
From staging to photographic painting, from reportage to the intimate, CAPTURES testifies to the extraordinary richness of the photographic medium and affirms, through these three gazes, its full and complete place among the arts.
