Description
The gaze stops on a geometric assembly where memory and space mingle. The drawing is organized around rectangular shapes and sharp lines.
A blue block, striped with black and surrounded by an acid green, dominates the upper part. It evokes a barred window or a confined space.
Under a roof schematized by a red line, an aerial view unfolds. The density of a neighborhood is discernible there, an entanglement of gray roofs drawn with precision.
A red structure, resembling a staircase or a gateway, creates a central passage point. This motif guides the eye towards the bottom of the composition.
In the foreground, a sinuous green line stretches. This line recalls a barbed wire, suggesting a border or an obstacle.
The artist uses a conceptual style here to address the themes of constraint and territory. The contrast between the primary colors and the gray of the buildings highlights a visual tension.
This composition on paper, created in 2024, plays on the superposition of planes to translate a sensation of confinement. The white background accentuates the isolation of the graphic elements.
Presentation
Yazan Abu Salameh is a Palestinian artist whose work explores how life under occupation shapes the spaces people live in and their sense of movement, freedom, and belonging. Working primarily with ink and mixed media, he depicts walls, buildings, military structures, and enclosed spaces, transforming them into reflections on restriction and the desire for freedom. His restrained compositions, often marked by small windows, openings, and touches of colour, create a contrast between confinement and hope, turning familiar surroundings into spaces for reflection.
Born in Jerusalem in 1993, Abu Salameh studied Fine Arts at Dar Al-Kalima University in Bethlehem from 2011. His work is informed by his close relationship with the Palestinian landscape and the everyday realities of living within a contested environment. Through architecture and space, he explores how experiences of movement, separation, and control become part of everyday life and memory. Abu Salameh currently lives and works in Ramallah, where he continues to develop his practice from his studio.
