Description
An orange and circular sun dominates the white sky. Its nervous line brings immediate warmth to the composition. Below, a miniature city rises. Rectangular blocks pile up with a marked urban density. Grey and ocher tones mix to evoke concrete and earth.
The whole rests in an open box. This container transforms the city into a portable object. The perspective emphasizes the fragility of this arrangement. The pastel creates rich and grainy textures.
The contrast between the rigidity of the buildings and the softness of the line invites reflection. The scene suggests a balance between confinement and hope. The gaze circulates between the closed structure and the openness of the sky. The light seems to emanate from the center of the solar disc.
This composition created in 202 plays on the superposition of planes. The cast shadows anchor the box in a gray and neutral space. The work ends with a play of precise hatching on the cardboard walls.
Presentation
Yazan Abu Salameh is a Palestinian artist whose work explores how life under occupation shapes the spaces people live in and their sense of movement, freedom, and belonging. Working primarily with ink and mixed media, he depicts walls, buildings, military structures, and enclosed spaces, transforming them into reflections on restriction and the desire for freedom. His restrained compositions, often marked by small windows, openings, and touches of colour, create a contrast between confinement and hope, turning familiar surroundings into spaces for reflection.
Born in Jerusalem in 1993, Abu Salameh studied Fine Arts at Dar Al-Kalima University in Bethlehem from 2011. His work is informed by his close relationship with the Palestinian landscape and the everyday realities of living within a contested environment. Through architecture and space, he explores how experiences of movement, separation, and control become part of everyday life and memory. Abu Salameh currently lives and works in Ramallah, where he continues to develop his practice from his studio.
