Description
The precise line structures a dense urban landscape. Sheet metal roofs pile up in a tight composition. This architecture evokes the reality of Palestinian neighborhoods. The drawing plays on the contrasts of textures. The gray of the graphite emphasizes the harshness of the materials.
Above this city, a rectangle opens up like a screen. A hand emerges behind bars. It tries to grasp a solar disk. Birds fly around this focal point. These silhouettes suggest a desire for escape and freedom.
The artist mixes memory and built space here. The calligraphed text brings a narrative dimension to the scene. The gaze circulates between the stagnation of the ground and the hope of the sky. The composition opposes the rigidity of the walls to the fluidity of flight.
The work uses art drawing techniques. It was created in 2025. The graphic rendering highlights the tension between constraint and dream. The white paper accentuates the clarity of the lines and the depth of the shadows.
Presentation
Yazan Abu Salameh is a Palestinian artist whose work explores how life under occupation shapes the spaces people live in and their sense of movement, freedom, and belonging. Working primarily with ink and mixed media, he depicts walls, buildings, military structures, and enclosed spaces, transforming them into reflections on restriction and the desire for freedom. His restrained compositions, often marked by small windows, openings, and touches of colour, create a contrast between confinement and hope, turning familiar surroundings into spaces for reflection.
Born in Jerusalem in 1993, Abu Salameh studied Fine Arts at Dar Al-Kalima University in Bethlehem from 2011. His work is informed by his close relationship with the Palestinian landscape and the everyday realities of living within a contested environment. Through architecture and space, he explores how experiences of movement, separation, and control become part of everyday life and memory. Abu Salameh currently lives and works in Ramallah, where he continues to develop his practice from his studio.
