Bruno Fert

France • 1971

Bruno Fert's images reveal political or social issues by unveiling them from a unique angle.

Biography

At the age of twelve, Bruno Fert lost precious family albums entrusted to him by his grandmother: no more family photos! As if to repair this loss, he became a photographer and went off to record the world and its inhabitants in negatives.

Bruno Fert has produced numerous photo essays in the Middle East and Africa for newspapers and magazines. Housing, whether modest shelters or makeshift dwellings, is a recurring theme in his work. Back in Paris, he photographed the igloo tents of the homeless, isolating them within expansive urban landscapes. These photographs of tents at night won third place in the prestigious World Press Photo competition in 2007.

Through his images, Bruno seeks to reveal social or political issues by presenting them from a unique perspective. His series "The Absent Ones" evokes Palestinian refugees without showing them: the photographs of what remains of their homes tell us about the exodus of this population in 1948.

His work has been recognized with the World Press Photo 2007, the Roger Pic Prize 2013, the Neuflize Prize 2015 and the Photography Prize of the Academy of Fine Arts in 2017. His REFUGE series was selected for the Amnesty International Media Awards 2020 and Bruno Fert is one of the winners of the BNF's major photographic commission in 2021.
