Cedart Gallery

Genève - Switzerland

The name Cedart is a tribute to the Cedar Tavern, a bar-restaurant that was established in Greenwich Village, New York and known as a landmark for many prominent abstract expressionist painters and writers of the Beat Generation. The likes of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, Michael Goldberg, Landes Lewitin, James Brooks, Charles Cajori, Mercedes Matter and others from the New York School used to spend time in the Cedar Tavern in the 1950’s while living in Greenwich Village. Historians consider this place an important incubator of the abstract expressionist movement. The Cedar Bar was also popular amongst well known writers such as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, Frank O’Hara and LeRoi Jones. Pollock was eventually banned from the establishment for tearing the bathroom door off its hinges and hurling it across the room at Franz Kline, as was Kerouac, who allegedly urinated in an ashtray.
